Maid Marian and her Merry Men

A new musical stage show of Sir Tony Robinsons Hit BAFTA winning BBC TV show ”Maid Marian and Her Merry Men”

About The TV Show:

Maid Marian and her Merry Men was created and written by Tony Robinson, and was directed by David Bell. It first aired in 1989 on BBC one and would remain on air until 1994 with 26 episodes across 4 seasons.

Episodes generally would last for 25 minutes with a single camera setup, with a recurring cast of clearly defined ‘Protagonists’ and ‘Antagonists’. The protagonists included recognisable figures such as Maid Marian and Robin Hood, while the familiar antagonists included King John and The Sherrif of Nottingham (played by Tony Robinson)

The show would consistently pay homage to, and spoof popular culture, particularly well-known films and television programmes. It’s sense of humour and approach to comedy was often likened to Blackadder, especially due to Tony’s involvement. Although set in Nottingham, the show itself was shot in Somerset.

The show won a number of awards, most notably in 1990 when it wont “Best Children’s Programme (Entertainment/Drama) at the BAFTAs. As well as this it was presented with awards by the Royal Television Society and the Children’s Programme Festival in Munich.

Music was a large part of the show’s identity, with every episode containing at least one, and in some cases two songs. These were primarily wholly original songs, but occasionally they would be parodies of popular songs at the time.
